What to Do Right Now
Stop the water first, then call. Three things, in this order:
- Close the cistern tap. A small isolating tap sits on the pipe feeding the cistern. Turn it clockwise to stop the tank refilling.
- Do not flush again. One more flush into a blocked line pushes whatever is sitting in the pipe straight over the rim.
- Shut the main if it keeps running. If the cistern tap will not close, or water is coming up through the floor waste, turn the water off at the meter out front.
Once the water is stopped, call (07) 3524 7117. Keep kids and pets off the wet floor, and open a window if the smell is strong.

What Usually Causes It
From the simplest fix to the biggest job:
- A cistern fault. The fill valve sticks open or the flush button jams, and the tank overflows into the pan continuously. A parts swap, done in one visit.
- A blocked pan or drain. Paper, wipes or a foreign object jam the S-bend or the pipe just past it. The water you flush has nowhere to go, so it comes back up.
- A blocked sewer line. Further down, the house drain itself is obstructed, and every fixture on that run gurgles, slows and then surges back.
- A stormwater cross-load. In heavy rain, water that should stay in the stormwater system finds its way into gullies and floor wastes, and low-set laundries cop the overflow.

What You Can Safely Check
You can check a few things without touching anything unsafe:
Watch the bowl level
If it rises only when you flush and settles after, the blockage is close, often in the pan or the first metre of pipe.
Listen to other fixtures
Run the laundry tub or the basin. If they gurgle while the toilet is low, the blockage is shared, which means it sits in the drain, not the toilet.
Look at the yard gully
If the gully outside is holding water or spilling too, the problem is in the house drain, and no amount of plunging the pan will fix it.
Never reach into the bowl or use drain acid on a toilet. Failed chemicals sit in the pipe and land on whoever opens the joint.

When to Call Us
Call straight away if any of these is true:
- sewage has reached the floor
- water is rising in the shower or laundry as well
- the overflow is inside a unit, where it can run through to a neighbour
Those situations worsen by the hour, while a bowl that holds its water and drains slowly can wait for a booked visit.
If you are unsure which one you have, ring (07) 3524 7117 and describe it. We would rather talk you through it than have you guess.

What We Do
First visit, the urgent part:
We shut the water down, contain the spill and clear the blockage at the best access point, then flush the line and check the flow with you before we pack up.
If the fault is in the cistern:
We fit new tank internals there and then, so it refills to the right level and shuts off cleanly.
If the overflow points to something bigger:
Roots or a collapsed sewer section need more than a clear-out. We report what we found, and the price for that work comes to you in writing first.
For faults that keep coming back, toilet repairs covers cisterns, pans and flush problems, and a blocked sewer is its own drainage service.

Toilets and the Two Wooloowins
This suburb runs on two plumbing patterns, and both end in overflowing toilets.
On the unit side of the tracks
the townhouses and apartments near Hudson Road fail through braided hoses and shared stacks, so one blocked line in a block of units can back up several bathrooms at once.
The interwar houses
big allotments mean long earthenware drain runs to the sewer, laid in short clay sections with joint after joint, and a root or a settled socket anywhere along them can start a blockage that reaches the pan.
Mixed stock, mixed causes
at the last census, 46.1 per cent of homes here were separate houses and 48.0 per cent flats or apartments, so we arrive ready for a cistern valve on Adamson Street or a main-line obstruction under a character-overlay Queenslander.
Overflow Work We Cover
Our toilet overflow work covers the full job, from the first bucket of water to the last flush test:
Make Safe and Contain
The water gets shut off at the cistern tap or the meter, the spill gets contained with what is on hand, and the floor gets made safe before work starts.
Clear the Blockage
The pan, the S-bend and the drain line get cleared using whatever method the blockage calls for, then the whole run gets flushed clean and the water carry watched away.
Repair the Cistern
Stuck fill valves, jammed flush buttons and worn seals get replaced with new parts there and then, so the tank stops trickling and the overflow channel never gets its workout.
Test and Clean Up
Every fixture on the line gets a final test flush, the floor gets mopped dry, and the flow gets checked once more, so the toilet is proven before we leave.

Problems We See Most
Water Rising With Every Flush
A pan that fills and nearly overflows on every flush, caused by a blockage just past the S-bend, and cleared with the right tool in a single visit.
The Gurgling Laundry Tub
Drains that bubble in the laundry while the toilet runs slow point to a shared line, which means the blockage sits further down and needs the drain cleared.
The Cistern That Never Stops
A tank that keeps trickling into the pan has a fill valve or seal past its best, and the overflow channel inside the cistern is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Sewage at the Floor Waste
Water coming up through the shower or laundry grate means the sewer line itself is blocked, and the sooner it is cleared, the less gets affected inside.

Why a Fast Response Matters
Timber floors over stumps take no kindness from a soak
Boards cup, doors swell and subfloor rot gets a foothold while the water sits, which is why we treat a spilling pan as urgent.
On a shared stack, your overflow does not stay yours
It runs through floor cavities into the home beside or below, and the repair grows with every neighbour it reaches.
What comes up from a sewer line is not clean water
The longer it sits on grout and skirting, the bigger the clean-up after the plumbing is done.

Toilet Overflow Questions
Call (07) 3524 7117Do I turn the water off at the tap behind the toilet or at the meter?
Try the small isolating tap on the cistern pipe first, and if it will not budge or water is still coming up, shut everything down at the meter out front.
Is water from an overflowing toilet a health risk in a Wooloowin unit block?
Yes, because what spills from a pan or floor waste is not clean water, so keep everyone away, shut the door and leave the clean-up and the repair to us.
Who owns the blocked sewer pipe, me or Urban Utilities?
Urban Utilities owns the public sewer and the street mains, and the owner maintains every pipe from the connection to the house, right up to the meter.
Why does the toilet in our old Wooloowin house keep blocking?
The interwar places on the big allotments drain to the sewer through long earthenware runs full of joints, and tree roots love a joint that has settled or opened.
Can an overflowing toilet wait until the morning?
Water sitting inside the bowl can usually wait, but sewage on a floor or heading for a wall cavity is a now problem, so call the moment it spreads.
How do I book an emergency plumber in Wooloowin?
